Remember 1993? Remember the summer? Remember the summer movies of 1993? Remember dinomania? Remember dad-movie-mania? Remember Nora Ephron movies making $125 million at the box office? Remember 10-to-12-year-old boys starring in movie after movie after movie? Remember legal thrillers? Remember Michael Crichton? Remember riding your bike around by yourself while your mom was out of town and your dad was at work, hitting the curb and going over the handlebars, scraping the hell out of both your knees and walking yourself home in search of first aid? Remember your dad dropping you and your brother off at the mall to see Coneheads and So I Married an Axe Murderer and the first big-budget movie based on a video game? Remember Stallone trying to be normal? Remember renting these movies on VHS around Christmas 1993 or seeing them in second-run all the way in summer 1994? Remember Last Action Hero vs. Jurassic Park? Remember playing the Jurassic Park theme at your piano recital? Remember sequels, but not that many sequels? Remember when sequels were kinda low-rent most of the time? Remember?!?!?!

SportsAlcohol.com remembers. We remember every year! So here, finally completing our long-running series-within-the-series about summer movies of the 1990s, is a look at the summer movies of 1993. Nathaniel, Sara, Jeremy, Ben, Marisa, and Jesse are all here to talk about our hazy memories, our more recent rewatches, and, yes, dino-mania as we lived it.

We’ve recorded a whole lot of podcast episodes here at SportsAlcohol.com, but it’s safe to say our most popular episode format has been our annual exploration of the top summer movies of the past — specifically, 20 years past, which means this year we’ve reached summer 2001. (And also, in a few weeks, 1991, because we’ve expanded to 30-years-ago summers in an attempt to sweep the corners on the entirety of the 1990s.)

The summer movies of 2001 are all about sequels, stars, and bad ideas! So in some ways, it’s a lot like most summer movie seasons; in others, it’s a peek into a different world between the more adult-oriented entertainment of the ’90s and the superhero dominance that was lurking just around the corner. Listen in as Marisa, Nathaniel, Ben, Jesse, and Jeremy talk about our own histories with Vin Diesel, apes, dinos, Lara Croft, so many sequels, and the terrifying genesis of dance party endings. We also try in vain to save the Point Break talk for the next episode.

Still cranking out movies, sometimes faster than ever, as he enters his 70s, Steven Spielberg remains an enormous figure who looms, moonlike, over the cinematic landscape. Not everyone loves his work, and even those who love his work don’t love everything about it, but there’s no denying his influence, importance, and talent. On the occasion of Ready Player One, his new movie (and fourth in about two and a half years!), we assembled a group mixing hardcore fans, casual watchers, and genuine skeptics of his work to discuss the new film and everything that came before it. This was such an expansive discussion that we’ve split it into two episodes. Part 1 focuses on Ready Player One and some of his directorial trademarks; Part 2 focuses on the rest of his career and the Spielberg movies and ephemera that Marisa, Ben, Sara, Nathaniel, and Jesse love, hate, or may have just watched for the first time.     16 Things You Didn’t Know About Jurassic Park

    1. Jurassic Park contains only 75 digital effects shots. The rest of the effects were achieved with animatronics, miniatures, and models.

    2. All of the film’s explicit sex scenes were cut. They were later repurposed for the Sylvester Stallone movie The Specialist.

    3. Actors considered for the role of Dr. Alan Grant included Harrison Ford, Tom Selleck, Don Johnson, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, John Travolta, Anthony Hopkins, Sir John Gielgud, Meg Ryan, the ghost of Lucille Ball, Ronald Reagan, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Benji, Grape Ape, an old toaster, Theodore Rex, and Mary-Kate Olsen by herself.

    4. And also Bill Pullman.

    5. No one was considered for the role of Dr. Ian Malcolm, including Jeff Goldblum.

    6. Travis Barker, age thirteen, saw Jurassic Park twenty-seven times in the theater, setting a record that he was unable to verify but that no one could refute. In an interview with his local ABC affiliate, Travis breathlessly summarized the plot of the movie scene by scene, showing off an impeccable imitation of both the Dilophosaurus and Wayne Knight. All of this was cut from the broadcast, though footage of his wild gesticulations could be seen briefly in montage over the reporter’s misleading explanation of the film’s plot. Travis called the news to complain, both about his unused footage and the misleading plot synopsis, but they could only tell him this was ABC Carpet Cleaners, not the TV station.
