After we voted on our definitive list of the 20 best movies of 2016, naturally we had to get together and talk about it. So Marisa, Sara, Jesse, and Nathaniel assembled on a winter evening to go over everything from The Neon Demon to La La Land; from the movies all four of us listed to the handful that got on the list with the support of just one; from the movies we loved to the movies we really fucking loved. Just like last year, it’s a wide-ranging yet quickly paced conversation that takes you through a year in film way better than any old Oscars ever could!

Since you guys asked what I thought: I didn’t vote on the list because I didn’t see a lot of movies in theaters this year. The two movies I did see that made our list were Arrival and Hail, Cesar!
Arrival is very good, but I don’t have anything to add besides I try not to correct people when they call it The Arrival (which is a much worse Charlie Sheen Film). I was prepared to say no X one million on this new Blade Runner film, but it’s directed by Villeneuve and shot by Roger Deakins so I feel like I have to give it a chance now.
I was prepared for Hail, Cesar! to be a mess based on what others who saw it before me and it kind of is. It’s sum is not greater than the parts, but what parts! I’d rank it solidly above Intolerable Cruelty and The Ladykillers. Good for a movie, but not good for a Coen Brothers movie.
I did see Star Trek into Darkness and wasn’t as blown away as Jesse was. It might be a little rote, but my One Blockbuster from the year will always be the Captain America one.
Speaking of Jesse, he’s always hated Jim Jarmusch. When we would go to the rental store in high school, he would never let me rent Dead Man because “Jim Fucking Jarmusch is so fucking boring.”
As for movies I’m looking forward to this year: John Wick: Chapter Two. There’s a lot of excitement for it in our office. We assume if they can’t get Keanu to complete the trilogy, it will star the new dog avenging his death and will be entitled John Wick, Chapter Three: Dog Wick
I don’t remember saying that about Jim Jarmusch! I rented Night on Earth and liked it well enough. I think Only Lovers Left Alive is my favorite of his that I’ve seen, though. I own Dead Man (it was a gift) (I haven’t watched it) if you want to borrow it…
You said it more than once. I don’t want to borrow your copy of Dead Man, I want you to give it to me along with the copy of Running Time you ripped out of my hand at Ames going out of business sale
